Become a Better Speaker
Every time people speak at the club their speech is evaluated by another member. The focus of the evaluation is on encouraging what is good whilst offering advice on how to improve. Our method for achieving speaking confidence is laid out in the ‘Speakers Guide’ and is based around completing a series of achievement certificates:

Foundation Certificate of Achievement
- Starting Your Journey
- Constructing A Speech
- Speaking With Conviction
- Using Gestures and Body Language
- Using Your Voice
The ASC Certificate of Achievement
- Vocabulary and Word Pictures
- Storytelling and Narrative
- Using Humour
- Developing Audience Rapport
- The “Showpiece”
The Diploma in Public Speaking
- The Impromptu Speech
- Speaking to a non ASC audience
- Using Presentation Aids
- Two other assignments drawn from:
- Giving A Lecture
- Making A Business Presentation
- Speeches for Occasions
- Prepared Speaking Without Notes
The progression route described above is our core offer that develops the speakers toolbox as they strive to become a more complete communicator. There is also the complimentary pathway of “Applied Speaking” focused on achieving change in your audience. The speaker states their broad purpose (entertain, persuade, inform or pay tribute) and specific objective (i.e. my audience will be persuaded that bungalow’s are the worst form of housing) at the beginning of their speech and it is the audience, not an evaluator, that decides if the speaker has met their objective or not. Complete six successful applied speeches and you get the “Certificate in Applied Public Speaking”. Applied Speaking can help to bridge the gap between practicing skills in the club and speaking out in the real world.
